I'm Malaysian & this is my culture - Deepavali

Deepavali - the festival of light. It's a Hindu festival which I remember celebrating it with my friends from my school years. I was 13 or 14 years old and my classmates who most of them are Hindus, will be busy and happily getting ready to celebrate this special occasion. At times, they make me feel part of the family even tho I was the only Chinese. I enjoyed going to each of their house to celebrate with them, not forgetting to eat all the food that was served.

Every year, like most of the celebration here in Malaysia - colourful fireworks light up the night skies, hearth throbbing explosions travels miles away from the neighbourhood,  such joyous ambience! For Deepavali, it is the same, kids & adults will be celebrating it with firecrackers and fireworks. Hindus believe, firecrackers and fireworks are to scare and send away evil spirits and they will also be wearing new clothes and share sweets & scrumptious meal with friends and families. 

Being Malaysians, it is only natural that we adapt, share and celebrate our unique multiracial culture, I wish to celebrate this special day with my friends who I've known in the past and i am blessed that i  had the opportunity and privilege to enjoy those special moments with them.

As for this year, I'm going to my friend Rubini's house and to eat all her sweets that's she serving :)

A New Year or a new beginning of the Islamic Calendar

The Muslims celebrate by praying and remembering the journey of the Prophet Muhammad's migration to Madinah (Simply known as the city) After that It's famously known as the city of Prophet Muhammad.

Remembering my teenage years, days like this I will always stand on my kitchen balcony and listen to the chants and sounds of the prayers from the Mosque. I lived not far off the city's big mosque. Everyday I hear beautiful echoes of prayers from the Mosque as though it's coming from the sky. To me it's very soothing and it felt heavenly. I cherish every moment of it and feel very peaceful. 

We in Malaysia, as Malaysian it is only right to celebrating it with our Muslim friends their history of Islam. Selamat Maal Hijrah or Happy New Year to all my Muslim Brothers & Sisters. 

In god's name....

How have our thoughts wandered?
Wandered so wild deep within the dark - we hate a lot, we discourage a lot, we forget a lot
Are there barriers, is there fear or is there evil in us
We search for a mountain of excuses, a big sea of lies and a whole universe of faults
 
We are a creation of god
There is nothing bigger than god
We believe god
All we trust is in god
 
So where did we wander?
Where is our faith?
Or do we not remember the role we play?
What being has taken us away?
 
God showed us the way to be merciful
Taught us life towards serenity
Taught us to give hope
Taught us to be fair
 
That we are all from god
who has showered love upon us
No god brings hatred
And no god teaches us harm
 
So how have our thoughts wandered?
Wandered so wild deep within the dark - that we are ending each other's love
We are destroying each other's dreams
We are killing the nature that was brought to us
 
Why did we wander?
Is there a black hole pulling us into evil?
Have we forgotten the word of god that we are all equal?
Do we no longer remember that sharing is in our soul?
 
Honor thy neighbors, whom we are blessed with happiness
In kindness we believe, there shall be goodness in all things
Take responsibility for our actions only then respect we shall gain
Be courageous, as we protect all from pain
 
And now our thoughts wander...
 
Wander so wild deep within ourselves that we should live
We should love for god's sake
Because only then we are truly one
in god's name
